Notes From Wes

Major Announcement Monday — November 3rd, 2008

I’ve been struggling with a way to present this bit of news eloquently, so I’m just gonna lay it all out there in one big pile:

I’ve decided to end YHT.

This decision was not an easy one, and I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it and talking it over with my friends and family.  2008 has been a difficult year for me personally, and I believe that now is as a good a time as any to end one project and start working on the next.

The final “You’ll Have That” strip will be published on Friday, January 2nd, 2009.  I hope to tie up as many loose ends as possible over the next two months, and I’ll try my darnedest to post these last strips on time!  In February of ‘09 I’ll be launching a new comic feature here at this site.

So I hope you guys will stick around to see how this cartoon concludes and sneak a peek at the comic I’ll be launching early next year.  I’ve always appreciated all of your support and encouragement, and my biggest fear is that I’m disappointing most of you.  I guess that’s a good problem to have, but I would hope that most of you would stick around for the next chapter in my cartooning career.  I’m going to need your support more than ever in the coming months!

- Wes

Good on you Wes, I look forward to seeing your next project.

YHT is a great strip. I’m actually happier to be around to witness the end of it rather than to have eventually seen it drawn out and strained when your heart isn’t in it.

Best of luck and keep your chin up!

  2. Erica

YHT is my favorite comic ever, and I’ll always love it, but I’m equally excited to see what you’ll have in store for us next. Thanks for the early heads up; it’ll give me plenty of time to come to terms with it.

Best of luck in your new endeavors, I’ll be sure to stick around to see them!

  3. Michael Kinyon

If it’s time to move on, it’s time to move on. I look forward to seeing how it all wraps up.

I’m still betting on a big cream pie fight in the last strip.

  4. david

i will admit, i’m saddened by this. i have become very fond of yht. my wife and i could relate to the strip on so many levels. but, i’m also looking forward to the next big project wes has instore. it’s going to be weird not clicking the favorites button and clicking on yhtcomic.com :(
    you have my support wes!

  5. EdgarVerona

Oh… I saw the header and thought it was an extension of your joke post in the forums!

I, too, have to admit that I’m sad about this development in that I’ve grown close to the characters and the series in general. But Wes, you know that we’ll be here to support you in your next venture!

Would you still be up for doing commissioned YHT strips? I’m still trying to round up money to do that (things have been tighter than I thought they would be since we made the decision to move), but I’m hoping that we’ll be able to soon!

I’m very sorry that this has been a hard year for you. =( I don’t know what the details of the hardship has been, but know that your fans have your back.

  6. jynksie

Best wishes with your next project Wes. You have to follow your creative juices in order to flourish, so follow the feeling !

Be sure when you close out YHT, you leave the possibility of a return one day… it could possibly find it’s way back to you !!

  7. Beth

I’m never upset when a comic ends, so long as there’s an ending. When things are just left in limbo I get a little miffed. Case in point: I’m honor-bound to kick Ian J in the nads over RPG World. Even though I’m one of those people that will play a game for 80+ hours, get to the lastest boss of them all… and then never finish. XD

Anyway! Yes. I’m not going to be disappointed unless your ending sucks. And don’t kill off everyone. Stephen King does that, but it won’t make you any money. I promise.

  8. Emily

I’ve gotta say, even though I’m sure I’ll check out your new project in support of everything you’ve done, this really is kind of disappointing. I’ve loved YHT! It’s going to be so sad to not have anything small to look forward to every week now. My boyfriend and I have so much in common with Katie and Andy that it feels like theyre breaking up with us a little bit.

I can appreciate you needing to try something new though, and I’m sorry this year has been hard for you Wes. If you reconsider though, we’ll take you back with open arms!

  9. jage

just dont end it with a white screen and a journey song (whatever sopranos did; people i worked with hated that).

  10. William

I totally understand your choice and I support whatever you as an artist choose to do. I’m one of those “quite people who just enjoy reading your comic” and I just want to say that I’m very glad that I stumbled over YHT a long time ago. I can say that you won’t loose me because this story ends and a new one begins. That would be like saying I’ll never read anything by J.K.Rowling since she finished the Harry Potter series. That’s not going to happen and you aren’t going to loose your fans either. The first step is hard but remember to enjoy the feel of the wind beneath your wings. :)

  11. Hari Sriskantha

Oh, Wes! I didn’t see that coming… but I just wanted to say that YHT is a great strip, you should be proud of what you’ve accomplished, and I look forward to the new stuff in February!

  12. Jesse Kiefer

Whew, quite a bomb to drop on Monday morning…

I won’t be going anywhere. I love your style. Art and Writing.

No matter when you end it I’m gonna miss the Andy/Katie wackiness that always had me checking my house for cameras.

Chin up Wes, There’s nothing to it but to do it. (yep I went there)

  13. Tommy

Man… I had just told my wife this was gonna be a bad day! Anyhow, I don’t blame ya for wanting to try something new and yes I am looking forward to seeing what you have coming. When you are working on something fresh and new and have the artistic juices flowing… it’s going to be awesome!

  14. LVR

i’m going to miss Katie and Andy too…but i will totally check out your new work with excitement. i’m so glad you’re starting something new rather than just ending YHT and disappearing a la Bill Watterson. sorry to hear you’ve had a rough year- hope that God will turn that right around for you.

  15. Anna

Aww :( Do what you have to do, and I wish you all the best. 2009’s gonna be a good one :) x

  16. moi

    wow!

I’ve really fallen in love with YHT, & the characters. I can relate to the interactions of the characters.

I’ll look forward to whatever you start next :)

I am curious why you are ending YHT. Have you just run out of possibilities with these characters? Are you bored of the strip?

  17. Ajax

Aw, I expected this, from last Friday’s “major announcement” announcement. I could see that your heart was no longer fully in YHT. It’s appropriate that you move on to something that excites and inspires you — I know that if you’re enjoying it, we’ll enjoy it.

  18. Tom

Man! I’m sad to see you end this great comic, but you have to do what you think is best. :) Thanks for all the laughs on yht! You really hit the male-female relationship/interaction on the head with these characters. Great job! God bless in the future!

  19. Eric P

Yeah, I could kinda tell something like this was going to happen. Not because you had “jumped the shark” per se, but more because it seemed like you were struggling to keep motivated. Especially during the Zura competition and trying to do both YHT and Sandbox Chronicles. Also I think the megaplot of Steve/Emaline/Emily/Omar kinda dragged on. But regardless, I will miss YHT. It is a clever strip that has produced many gems over the last couple of years. Perhaps before it is over, we should all share our favorite YHT strip in appreciation for Wes and all he’s done. As for your next project, Wes, you know I’ll be there. Keep up the great work.

  20. Wes Molebash

Thanks for the encouragement, guys! I really appreciate it!

    - Wes

  21. Anna

I was eating cereal while looking at the comic this morning and when I read your announcement I actually dropped my spoon. However sad I am, I agree with a comment above that I’m glad that I will get to see YHT end, instead of dragging on forever.

I’ll be here for the new project, you are amazing. I hope that the rest of 2008 gets better for you. You know you have a strong army of supporters here if you ever need anything, even if it’s just praise… :)

  22. Brock

Wes, this saddens me greatly. YHT was the first webcomic I read on a regular basis, and it’s still my favorite. It’s also the only comic, besides my own, that my wife will read as well. And, let’s face it, she only reads mine because she has to. She reads yours because she wants to. YHT never got the appreciation from the webcomics world that it deserved.

You’ve carefully avoided telling us the nitty gritty details of why you’re ending YHT, but with the scaling back of the schedule and the late strips, it has been clear for a little while now that something has been getting in the way. Maybe it’s your enthusiasm for the material, maybe it’s just personal stuff. Whatever it is, I think it’s safe to say that we understand. And we cartoonists understand more than most. It takes its toll.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with next. It’s been a blast reading about Andy, Katie, Steve and Emaline. You’re the real deal, so whatever you’ve got up your sleeve for next year I know is gonna be something special. I can’t wait.

  23. stunder

Awe darn it. I was just catching up on my RSS feeds and now this. This isn’t good news at all. I love YHT and now its going away.

  24. danielle corsetto

Oh man!! I’m gonna miss YTH big-time, but I’m glad you’re starting a new project and I’m also glad that you gave us several months’ notice. That was really really nice of you. It’ll take that long to get over it. *sniff!*

  25. Sara

    D:

This is upsetting, I wont lie.
But I’m excited to see what you have in store for us, and as long as you put Steve and Emaline back together in time for the end, then I’ll forgive you. :)

  26. david

Sad to see it go. Excited to see what comes next. I think the YHT fans have a responsibility to step up and promote your next project. Let’s get this thing some attention!

  27. Bob

I’m going to miss YHT, but I’ll certainly stick around to see what’s up next!

  28. Scott Drummond

What sad news! You’ll Have That will certainly be missed, but if you think it’s best this way, well, it’s better to end on a high note. I’ve very much enjoyed your work, Wes, and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. And I’m looking forward to seeing what new project you’ve got up your sleeve for next year!

    Best wishes.

  29. Sara(h)

too bad, as i only just recently found your site! but oh well. may God bless you wherever he leads you. and for pete’s sake, keep drawing! you’re great!

  30. Alyssa

I won’t lie.. It’s sad to hear YHT will be going, but I do look forward to seeing what new stuff you’ll have for us. I have no doubt that it will be just as funny and great.

  31. Scott

I say kill them off, that way you won’t be tempted to do a ‘reunion strip’ in ten years.

  32. maverick

    I’m going to protest.
I can understand your needing to progress and even start a new project, and I’m really excited to see what else you can bring us and I’ll support you no matter what you do.

But YHT has got to be one of my favorite things to read, and to hear that it’s ending is just nonsense. I don’t think anyone here would care if you took a Hiatus, or even didn’t update maybe even once every 3 months, whatever, but I don’t believe you have to end the comic to start a new one.

To me, starting a new project - especially one that I will put a lot of focus on - can be very tiring. It helps to have something else to come back to and get your mind off of things for a while, and I think that YHT can be that thing. We don’t need major story plots to keep coming back to the wonderful characters you’ve introduced us to, and the strip works great on it’s own with one liners and 4 panels.

I say don’t end it, but keep it as a side project, if anything. Only update it whenever you feel like it, and don’t be obligated to keep coming up with something new 3 days a week.

Again, I’ll support you in whatever you do, but I’m voting to “no ending” as long as I have a say in it.

  33. OTL

I’m very saddened by this decision, but it’s yours to make, obviously. YHT is such a nice, cute strip, that there just aren’t enough of anymore, either in print or web form. Still, the reason it turned out that way was due entirely to one Wes Molebash, so there’s really no question that I’ll be sticking around to see what’s next from him… er, you. Good luck!

  34. Ellie

Best of luck with everything, Wes! I’ll miss YHT and I look forward to your new projects!

  35. Ange

I’m sad to hear that your comic is ending, but also look forward to your new one, I am hoping that it will also have characters real enough to relate to. Im also reeeeaaallly hoping you will put some of these awesome comics art up for sale, I would love to own a piece of Katie and Andy art.

  36. Don O

Wow. It’s sad to see something go that has been so inspirational for me. I’m going to look forward to what ever you have to offer next.

  37. Chase

It’s sad to hear this Wes. Very rarely do I see an openly Christian artists express his faith and talent for all to see. I pray that God will continue to bless you in your path, and that He will always guide you no matter what happens.

I can’t wait to see the ending as this is one of my favorite strips to read.

Good luck and God Bless you on your next project.

  38. Wes Molebash

Ange - All my comic art is for sale. Check the “Store” page for prices and shoot me an e-mail for strip availability. :)

    - Wes

  39. EdgarVerona

I was hoping I’d feel better about it by the end of the day, but I don’t. I really love the characters you made. I’ll be sad to see them go. =(

What is the new comic that you’re going to be starting? Is it the one with the cats?

  40. Donny

Wes I gotta say that this was unexpected but I wish you the best of luck with the new comic. It is definitely gonna be bittersweet seeing the strip end since my ex and I basically fell in love with each other reading this and noticing the similarities. Then of course getting you to sketch my I’m sorry message lol. I guess just like that all good things must come to an end. Best of luck, Donny

  41. Nick Wright

This sucks. I have been pushing your comic as one of the few clean comics to my friends and family. Hope your next project is as good as this has been and better.

  42. Colleen Sheehy

Gonna miss the strip, Wes, but do what you have to do. Everyone knows a great toon never really dies, and we obviously are counting YHT among the greats! Onward and upward to more great things! Excelsior!

  43. Artisan54

i am sad to read that YHT is coming to an end. but at the same time i eagerly anticipate the new project. i have really enjoyed ready YHT for years, and really connect with the characters.

But that said i would much rather wes end it on a good note then to see it fizzle and die.

Way to make a hard decision for the best! God bless you and your family.

  44. KaosDG

Wes, I look forward to seeing the next set you churn out.

I’ll miss YHT, since the characters really remind me of my Wife and I, and the things we do.

I have this strip: http://www.yhtcomic.com/2005/07/27/07272005/ enlarged and hung in my apartment, waiting for the day that I can afford a house so I can rock out in a band that doesn’t suck :)

Thanks for the strip, and here’s to new things

  45. A Random Bunny

A planned ending is a lot better then a vanishing act. *Looks at a few webcomics in particular* I’m all for you moving on if that’s what you wanna do. I am excited to see how you make it all end. :)

  46. Dennis

Thanks for all the laughs and I can’t wait to see the next project

  47. Darrell Frazier

It’s good to know that you will still be creating. It was great to talk with you at Mid Ohio! I’ll enjoy this strip until it’s end, and I look forward to what you are working on!

  48. Nick Wright

Theres nothing to it but to do it

  49. Edmar

Congratulations Wes. I really like yht, but if you need to move on, you have my support. :)

  50. Jesús Neri

Blegh… I’ve recently became a fan of your webcomic. I support your decision, and I’ll be looking foward to the end of this strip. Chin up! Greetings from Mexico

  51. Avi

I’ve only just discovered your comic in the past month or so, and I’ve become really fond of it, it’s become one of my favs out there. Love the characters, the content and the style. Thanks for the work, I’ve enjoyed it, and I look forward to seeing how it all pans out and your next project, and good luck for whatever you get up to. Cheers from NZ

  56. Worth

This is sad, sad news, Wes. I’m sure you struggled with this decision.

I will be reading YHT until the end and missing it when it is over. Here’s to your next artistic endeavor: may you catch lightning in a bottle…

    …again.

  57. Lee Cherolis

Hey Wes, it was great meeting you at Mid Ohio, good luck with your next project. YHT has been great!

  58. Marea

Sad but I totally understand.. I had to stop doing mine for a while (hope to start up again soon!) and it sucks but when you don’t have the time (or ideas sometimes!) it’s so hard to continue, even if you love it like your own baby. YHT is a great strip and it’s one of two I didn’t give up reading regularly when I went on my comics hiatus. Can’t wait to see what you have for us next :)

  59. Anonymous

I often don’t feel a need to post comments to comics that i read, but I have fallen in love with the characters of YHT. So I feel that it is important to tell you that you have done an amazing job with this comic and that makes me anticipate what this next project is going to bring. I have a feeling that this fresh storyline will allow you to expand and improve your talents as a writer and artist. I happened to come across this comic by chance and I’m so glad that I did because it has inspired me to work on my comics and to work harder at getting one in particular published. Thank you. Good luck, and remember there are probably many other readers like me that love your work and give you their support but just don’t tell you. Meaning you could have more support then you even know. ^^

  60. scimitarblue

I’m sad that YHT won’t be around, but I’m glad that you, your art and your creativity will still be here. Best of luck! Can’t wait to see what’s next!

  61. Emzily

I hate endings. I do wish you amazing amounts of luck on the next project. But I wish I’d found YHT sooner so I could’ve enjoyed it longer.

Wes, sorry to hear you’re going to be ending YHT especially since things seemed to be on the rise for you… the Mid-Ohio Comic Con, the San Diego Comic Con, the move from Viper to your own site…
Andy and Katie have been inspirations as to where I would eventually like to take Marc & Joey in my own strip. Looking forward to seeing what this new project might be…

  64. Iron Jack

Wes, this comic is one of my favorite and will be un to the end. one of the things that many people forget that stories have there own lives.. and all things that live, must pass away.
I am exited to see how it all comes out.. and I truly beleve that you are doing the right thing.
I look forward to your next project, and I pray that god smiles on it as he has on YHT.

  65. Scott Robertson

Sorry to hear it, and happy, all at once. You have my bow!

This would have been a great time to insert or link to a Legolas picture, but I’m kind of tired, and the Photoshop icon is way over there on the other side of my desktop.

  66. Jeff Prows

Wow… I started reading your comic because it reminded me of some newly wed friends of mine, now I’m married it’s even funnier, YHT will be missed.

  67. Jesse Jackson

But I just found the strip thanks to Mid-Ohio Con! Best of luck, I know that what ever you do you will do great!

  68. BenSpark

Wow, I totally missed this post. I can’t believe that you are bringing the comic to an end. However as a creator it makes sense that if something is no longer driving your passion then it is time to refocus that energy. I’ve met you and value your friendship, I invited you to my home and you were a perfect guest. I also think that your comic has been a perfect guest in our home as well each and every time we read it. Thanks so much for all the hard work you have put into this strip and I love the leaps you have made artistically. Seeing the strip evolve from the beginning has been very awesome. Make sure you keep us all informed about what is next.

  69. Leah

awww Wes. this makes me sad. I hope everything is well though. I very much love YHT that and I’ll be so so sad when it’s over. I hope the next is just as addicting.

  70. 19RAD

YOU’RE ENDING YHT ?!?!??!? im SO disappointed ! =( i love this comic and i wish i could keep reading it for years to come. but i am looking forward to your new comic, and i believe it’ll be just as amazing as YHT =)

  71. Guamish

But…. i just got here… and now you are dangling new stuffs at me… I’m in

  72. alsparky

Wes, I’m so sad to hear that you are ending YHT. I really love it, but I know that you will go on to create other wonderful works. And you are welcome here if you want to promote those works in the future.
Thank you for a wonderful run. I can’t wait to see the new work.

  73. JorgenMan

Best of luck, Wes. We’re sad to see you go.

  74. tressa

    It’s my fault, isn’t it?
Things have been hectic in my life as well, and I slacked off on my yht reading (along with all my other webcomics, not just yours..) and the day after I come back, you decide to end it :/

    well that’s silly.
But if you feel its necessary, then everyone supports you (if you hadn’t figured that out already) and we’ll all be waiting to see what you come up with next :)

  75. Steve

    This sucks… =/

  76. Rose

So excited to see your next project! Love your work!

  77. John

Too bad, hope it’ll make your life simpler. I could say YHT is my favorite webcomic but that would be a lie. It is however one of four I have bookmarked and check on at least twice a week. Love from Sweden.

  78. JKV

Well, I sure will miss those guys and girls…this has been my only web comic since your show in Chillicothe, OH. You have good insight and perspective to share through your art. I expect to be taken in by your next project as well. You can really draw dude. I expect us to do another show…..maybe kick off your next project in Chilli:) I’m with ya…

  79. Daniel Barcroft

Well, like any good comic, I’m going to miss YHT, and tell people about “this really great comic there used to be. Wish we could get more like that”. But, like any good cartoonist, I really can’t wait to see what’s next. I don’t mind favorite comics ending half so much as good cartoonists stopping. Onward and upward! Have a good day.

  80. Mike Rotch

I hope there’s some more sweet songs to record for the new comic.

  81. Chris

I have followed this comic since I picked up your first publication of YHT in a local comic store and I am glad, i did I am sorry to see it go. I will miss all the loved characters but look forward to visiting the site to see your new work. good luck Wes and thanks for so many laughs!!

  82. Carlos

    Hi Wes,
This is Carlos, a Brazilian fan. You know what I really like the most about YHT?
OK, I love the drawing style, I love both one-shot gags and storylines.
But what I really like the most is how your characters still manage to be funny without being overtly offensive, which, needless to say, is a rarity these days. Include Litterbox Chronicles in these compliments.
While I’m still loving reading YHT, I’m eager to know what will come in February.

  83. TJS & family

We are very saddened to hear that you are ending YHT along with other things in your life. We have been praying for God to bless you. Love your fans including East to West.

  84. Damien and Melanie

My wife and I were surprised to hear that you’re ending YHT (we somehow missed the post back in November), but we’re excited to see what you have in mind for your next project! Keep the faith brother and know that the vast majority of your fans will be with you in your new venture!

  85. Tofudisan

    :(

I’m so bummed. I missed the announcement back in November so reading the comic today was a bit of a shock. I love these characters. Andy and Kate remind me so much of my wife and I. Sigh. I feel like a part of me dies whenever a comic I read goes under.
